  • Brett Ward, a rising senior at Marvin Ridge High School, won first place in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Award of Excellence in Orlando on July 1, 2011, during the national job interview competition.

  • Congratulations to the Central Academy of Technology and Arts women's soccer team for winning the 2011 NC State 1A Championship. The team is coached by Jay Niessner.

  • The Union County Public Schools Communications Office won nine Blue Ribbon awards, recognizing outstanding school public relations publications across the state, during the North Carolina School Public Relations Association’s annual Blue Ribbon Awards Ceremony for Effective Communications.

Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is safe haven for students

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club area director Moses Fox III, at left, plays a game of Air Hockey with students in the club, an after-school program for Union County Public Schools students that is housed at Monroe Middle. The club’s doors opened officially on Jan. 17, 2011, with 24 students signed up to attend. On the third day, however, that number had already doubled. Club organizers held a grand opening Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.
